Minji Kang-Watrous

Dallas, TX • ♒︎

Minji Kang-Watrous is a contemporary Hanji artist whose work reflects a deep connection to her Korean heritage and the timeless art of Hanji, Korea's traditional paper-making craft. Born and raised in Seoul, Minji moved to Texas in her early 20s, bringing with her the cultural legacy and artistic traditions of her homeland.

Her journey into Hanji art began alongside her mother, Hyeon-Ok Seong, a skilled Hanji artist, whose intricate projects Minji assisted as a child. These early experiences unknowingly ignited her passion for the medium. After relocating to the U.S., Hanji became a source of comfort and connection, helping her navigate the emotional landscape of homesickness and cultural adaptation.

Minji’s creations are a seamless blend of tradition and modernity. She meticulously sources her Hanji paper from Korea, often collaborating with a third-generation Hanji shop that boasts over a century of history. This partnership underscores her dedication to preserving and honoring the materials and techniques that define her craft.

Through her work, Minji not only bridges the past and present but also introduces the beauty and intricacy of Hanji to new audiences, ensuring this ancient art form continues to inspire and evolve.
